Drilling
Our air rotary drilling rig drills through unconsolidated overburden, sand and bedrock. We provide drilling for geotechnical test holes and if required we are equipped to drill test holes in advance for environmental sampling.
We can drill up to 500 feet without a permit and are licensed for commercial wells as well as domestic. Blackwood Drilling's top rig drive rigs are designed and built by us with maximum efficiency in mind and are equipped for mud drilling rather then only air.

Pump
Testing
Pump testing is used to determine the capacity and flow rate of your water
well, we offer water well pump testing to determine if a well will produce
the water quantities required by the customer.
We also test for mineral and bacterial problems along with pump testing for realty projects and land developments.
The durations of our testing offered is 2 hours testing, 2 hours recovery, along with 12 and 12 or 24 and 24 longer specialized testing is offered if needed.
We use Mini Trol technology and have emergency water units available. And for unforeseen events we have a down hole camera for finding lost items.
Water Treatment Problems associated with water wells are water hardness and incrustation of the well and possibility of other existing high content minerals over the Canadian Drinking Water Standard.
Water hardness is the amount of mineral content of calcium and magnesium determined through a laboratory potable water analysis. The greater amount of minerals in the water results in "hard" water in which soap has difficulty achieving lather and by contrast, rainwater is considered "soft" water.
Blackwood Drilling is able to provide water treatment equipment for the residence to reduce the "hardness" levels of the well water that are prevalent in the Southern Alberta Region.
Well encrustation is formed from hard water deposits consisting of iron and magnesium minerals. We test for PH levels, treat the water well with a strong acid solution to dissolve the encrustation and make it possible to flush the dissolved solids from the well and put it back into service.
Geo Thermal
We offer our services as an installer of geothermal heating systems. Geothermal
heating offers a cost effective environmental alternative to conventional
gas or electrical heating. The heat of the earth is literally brought
into your structure to provide comfort.
Principal
How does it work? A geothermal heating and cooling system operates on
the principal that the temperature of the earth below the frost line is
a relatively constant 50 degrees Fahrenheit all year round. During cold
months the heat is extracted from the ground to heat a structure and in
the summer months, the heat within the hot surface structure air is dissipated
within the cooler ground temperatures.
Thermodynamically, this is referred to as a heat exchange and works exactly the same as an automobile radiator. The elements that comprise a heat exchange system include:
- Buried loops of piping
- Biodegradable antifreeze that circulates within the loops
- A pump to circulate the antifreeze
- A heat pump
Benefits
Loops of piping are buried in trenches in
the ground horizontally or in drilled boreholes vertically. The heating
and cooling ground loop piping is fusion welded and once installed the loops
are filled with antifreeze and connected to a pump. A closed loop is created
to pump the antifreeze underground to the pipes where the ground heat is
absorbed and returned to the surface. The heat is then transferred to the
structure thereby providing warmth. To provide cooling, the system works
in reverse where the heat from the warm structure is absorbed by the antifreeze
and transferred to the cooler ground, chilled by the ground temperature
returned to the surface to provide cooling.
The benefits realized in geothermal heating and cooling are durability and cost savings. The systems are very durable and the projected life span of the systems is a function of the pump. Regular service of the equipment will extend the lifetime of the pump. In the event of a failure, the pump is repaired or replaced and the heating/cooling system is once again ready to provide many more years of comfort and service. Some manufacturers warrant their ground-piping product for up to fifty years. The heating and cooling ground loop piping is fusion welded. Geothermal heating and cooling systems eliminate the requirement for chimneys and flues associated with conventional furnaces and condenser units required for air conditioning. The temperature provided by these systems is constant and non-fluctuating. Gone are the days of noisy cycles of blasts of hot or cold air!
The cost saving of geothermal systems involve the reduction or the elimination of natural gas conventional heating systems. According to the Geothermal Heat Pump Consortium. A geothermal system can reduce your heating bills up to fifty percent and lower your cooling bills up to thirty percent. Depending upon your current utility expense a geothermal system could pay for itself in two to seven years.
Track Hoe
Blackwood Drilling Ltd. has a track hoe for ditching to install cisterns, necessary water pipes, and power cables from the well to the structure. The track hoe is versatile and does not require a special permit for trailer transporting to and from each job site.
In the event of an emergency repair being required, we provide a quick response time.
